Guards and shields
Guards and shields are provided for your protection. Keep them in place and secure. Replace any guards and shields which may be damaged or removed for whatever reason.
Turn off and lock out electrical power
Before performing any service on the bin or associated equipment, make sure that electrical power is off and locked out.
Never enter a storage bin where grain handling machinery/equipment is in operation. you could be seriously injured or killed if you become tangled up in the equipment while it is running or inadvertently turned on. Shut off and lock out all electrical power
Use proper safety equipment when entering a bin
Grain stored inside a bin can act like quick sand causing you to sink into the grain mass and even suffocate. Before entering a bin with grain, lock out power to all equipment. Use a safety harness and safety line. Wear a dust respirator and avoid the center of the grain bin. Station a person outside the bin to help in case of an emergency.
Load and unload grain only from the center of the bin
Load and unload grain only from the center of the bin and maintain an even level of grain height around the walls of the bin. Failure to follow this procedure may result in structural failure of the bins/bin from unbalanced forces acting on the bin walls. Structural failure could cause injury or death to persons close to the point of failure.
Keep unauthorized persons clear of the area
Keep children and unauthorized persons away from your grain storage facility.
Educate all personnel of hazards and safety precautions
Make sure that all personnel working on or around this equipment are made aware of the hazards and are given these safety precautions. The operators of grain storage facilities should review these and other safety tips with all employees on a regular basis, and make sure safety guidelines are posted for continual review and awareness.
